On June 9th, 2025, the newly completed College of Science and Engineering Lab Building at Fu Jen Catholic University proudly received the Silver-level Green Building Label. This prestigious recognition not only affirms the building’s innovative design and environmental values but also highlights the university’s steadfast commitment to sustainable development.
The new laboratory building integrates the existing color palette of Fu Jen’s campus with modern, durable materials that enhance both aesthetic quality and long-term maintenance efficiency. Featuring grey-white ceramic tiles, aluminum panels, and exposed concrete surfaces, the building presents a sleek, modern architectural language that embodies the technological spirit of the College of Science and Engineering.
Energy efficiency and eco-conscious design are central to the building’s architectural concept. The layout follows a north-south orientation, with core utility spaces placed at both ends of a central corridor. Open balconies and windows on both sides of the corridor allow for ample natural light and ventilation. The large windows and extended balconies on the north and south façades further enhance airflow and lighting in the laboratories. To minimize thermal conductivity, the external walls are coated with insulating plaster, providing effective structural heat insulation that reduces indoor temperature fluctuations and energy consumption, creating a more comfortable learning and research environment.
In terms of water conservation and green landscaping, the building exemplifies sustainable water cycle practices. Rainwater is collected, filtered, and stored for irrigating native, drought-resistant plants. The site design incorporates grading techniques and strategic landscaping to promote gravity-based drainage and reduce surface runoff.
The building achieved the Green Building Silver Label by meeting six key criteria: greening volume, site water retention, daily energy efficiency, CO₂ emission reduction, water resource management, and wastewater/garbage improvement. This recognition validates the building’s outstanding performance in areas ranging from design and material selection to energy conservation, environmental protection, and sustainable landscaping. It stands as a new benchmark for campus sustainability and provides valuable experience for future green building development.
Through this milestone, Fu Jen Catholic University continues to lead by example, demonstrating how the fusion of modern science and sustainable architecture can foster a more responsible and forward-looking academic environment.
